Gen-Y Factor

I've heard many Gen-X people telling me how pissed off they are at Gen-Y babies. Yea, it's weird because they were pouring out their complaints to me, an obvious Gen-Y rebel.

Most of them go like this,

“These people have never suffered before; they don’t know how lucky they are!”

“I remember when I was at their age, I was slogging and making sure I obey my boss! Even when it’s past 6pm, I’ll still stay in the office until my job is done!”

“Young people think they can just jump from one job to another, wherever pays them more? Don’t they think about the future?”

And yes. This is what is happening to me.

As much as I admit being that brainless Gen-Y lass, I too am afraid of hiring someone, then losing him/her in the next minute. It suddenly felt like it is my duty to make sure they’re comfortable with the job!

I remember tendering my resignation letter right after my GM lashed out at me in front of my peers. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t long ago….

THEN I FIGURED OUT WHY.

The reason why we are unbelievably fearless, ultimate risk-takers and amazingly rebellious.

30 years ago, Mom & Dad worked really hard because they could see a future from then, which is now. Because they know that in 30 years’ time, they will be able to save an amount of money for them to be comfortable for the rest of their lives.

As of now. Can you see what you will become of in 30 years’ time?
I mean, you will be very, very lucky to still be alive if none of the natural disasters hit you! Touch wood, but seriously!

30 years ago, to see on papers that someone is kidnapped, it goes onto headline news.

Today, to see kidnapping cum murder cum rape news, it goes into a small section of The Star, in black & white print. Well, if you can spot it.

Times are different. We live in a world full of fears, nothing is certain anymore. Nobody can assure me that by staying at home all my life will keep me safe. William Hung gets famous. Mark Zuckerberg gets filthy rich. Steve Job has cancer.

If I hate doing office job, I'll get a part-time McD job. If I still hate it, maybe I'll join a singing competition and be famous all my life.

So, Daddys & Mommys, as much as you hate Gen-Ys, there’s almost nothing you can do to change us.

One thing I am sure. Is that we will hate Gen-Zs more than you hate us.
